Healthy Treats for Rabbits

Ensuring your rabbits have feeding hay is essential as high-quality feeding hay or fresh grass should make up 85-90% of your rabbits’ diet. Our Small Animal Census surveyed over six thousand small animal owners spanning over 20 thousands small animals, revealing almost a quarter of small pet owners are unaware of a difference between feeding and bedding hay. The census also showed that 48% of rabbit owners feed their rabbits hay twice a day and 49% feed them daily.

Dr Moyes explains: “For small pets such as rabbits to be healthy, it’s vital that you choose hay that’s specially grown for them to feed on. It has to be cut at just the right time to capture all the tasty, natural goodness, so your small pets enjoy eating it.”

Supplement your rabbits diet further with a small portion of rabbit nuggets. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund  (RWAF) recommends  , fed twice a day, per rabbit – along with the occasional healthy treat.

There are lots of safe and beneficial vegetables and herbs that rabbits can eat as a snack – along with some that should be avoided at all costs!

The  recommends the following vegetables and herbs for your rabbits to snack on:

• Basil, broccoli, beetroot greens
• Cabbage (dark green varieties), carrot tops and roots as a treat, cauliflower (including the leaves), celeriac, celery, coriander, curly kale, courgette (including flowers/excluding leaves)
• Dill
• Fennel
• Jerusalem artichoke
• Kale
• Mint, marrow
• Parsley, pepper, pumpkin
• Radish greens and roots, rocket
• Salad leaves, sprouts (but if you get them a sprout tree be careful of how much of the stalk they eat as it’s very tough), squash (any type – including cucumber)
• Thyme
• Watercress

 

 

Here are some fresh foods that should be avoided as they aren’t very healthy and some could cause potential health issues if large quantities are eaten.

• Lettuce – Some types of lettuce, such as iceberg, contain lactucarium which can be harmful to rabbits in large quantities. Light-coloured lettuce varieties are high in water and have very little nutritional value and will may give your rabbit the runs.
• Despite being the vegetable most associated with rabbits carrots are high in sugar which isn’t great for them. Fresh leafy green carrot tops on the other hand make a great treat for your buns
• Chard – It’s a leafy green but not one that rabbits can tolerate, potentially causing colic and bloating.
• Avocado – It might seem like the perfect rabbit snack food, but it’s fatty and should never be included in your rabbits’ diet.
• Rhubarb – This common garden plant can be poisonous to animals.
• Grass cuttings – Rabbits should be given unlimited access to steadily graze on fresh grass, just as they would in the wild, but doling out a pile of grass cuttings for them to demolish can be very harmful as the cuttings quickly start to ferment.
